Steve, who started crying, added: “Our minister at the time tried to counsel us, tried to ease the pain. He told us that the memories wouldn’t go away, but that the sting would, that it wouldn’t hurt so much – if we just prayed. But we stopped praying, stopped going to church. I hate him. I’ll hate him until the die. And then I’ll pulverize him if I meet him in hell. How could God take such a little boy? Why didn’t he do something?”

The room became silent. No one knew what to say.

“We appreciate your concerns. We really do,” Cathy said a few moments later.

“I don’t know what the world is coming to,” Joan said. “You have all of those terrorists in the Middle East and right here in America. People do drugs. The laws are too light. And now they’re even trying to destroy marriages by letting gay people marry.”

“I’m glad you brought that up,” Jim Miller said. “You just watch. The U.S. Supreme Court will favor all of those gays. Steve, I don’t think you’re headed for hell. God knows what you’ve been bearing, but those men and women – who decide to love the wrong sex – they’ll all rot in hell for that they do.”

Frank didn’t know how to respond. He finally directed the conversation toward summer plans and vacations before the evening wound up.

Joan gathered up a few decorative bags for each couple. She had filled each with ceramic air fresheners, homemade cookies, passes to the local movie theater and a special thank you note that read:
