Struggling with sin, forgiveness, the heart of Jesus and
your walk with the Lord? The following short story may help.
Blind Sinners
By Michael M. Murray
About The Author
I became a Christian in 1998 after a Catholic deacon guides me to
Jesus, helping me to trust in Him as my savior. Before that, I had a lose
idea of God but seldom did more than attend weekly Mass. Today, I attend a
non-denominational church with my wife of 16 years and our two boys. A
journalism major, I now work in the Internet industry with search engine
marketing.
At college in the 1980s, I found out one of my best friends was gay. In the
years that followed, I met other gay people. On TV and in the church
community, I grow tired of the bashing that goes on. At the risk of
offending the gay community, I will say that I believe it's not a sin to be
a homosexual - though I believe it's a sin to have homosexual sexual
relations.
I know the arguments in the Bible - that some Old Testament references are
outdated or were only culturally relevant at a time. I understand that Jesus
didn't specifically cite homosexuality as a sin (along with dozens of other
sins he never mentioned). But I believe the Word of God. I don't think the
Bible, in its translations and varied text, has just been something of man.
God isn't sitting in heaven, looking at this book, saying: "Oh, my. They
sure pulled one over on me. How did they ever write that without me?" God
orchestrated the whole Bible - the stories, the personalities, the
prophecies, the truths. It's the perfect form of communication from Him to
us. Otherwise, we'd all need some kind of consistent download planted in our
minds so we'd know what he wanted us to know. The Bible is vague at times
and incomplete. I'm fine with that because God doesn't owe me an
explanation.
In the end, I believe the Bible embraces marriage between a man and a woman.
But I'm frustrated with the bigots who hold homosexual relations up as if
it's the sin of all sins. It's not. Pride, anxiety, coveting, bitterness,
drug and alcohol abuse, stealing, hatred and so many other sins separate us
from God as well. I'm going to heaven because I know my redeemer, Jesus, who
died for me and paid the price for my sins.
Instead of preaching against homosexual men and women - and blathering about
the origin of AIDS - I pray that God will soften the hearts of Christian and
non-Christian bigots and help them be far more compassionate. Maybe they can
talk with gays, pray with gays and care for the millions who suffer from
AIDS.
