Frank
wasn’t used to hearing Brian talk about church, marriage, women or the Lord.
“What church did you say you attend?”
“It’s a non-denominational church in the inner city – Bread of Life Community Church,” Brian said. One of the residents at the AIDS home attended the church and recommended it. Before that, I attended St. Mark’s in Maplevale. My faith just seems a lot stronger, at least ever since I joined.”
“So you like it there,” Frank said.
“Yes, a lot. There is a warmth and sincerity I haven’t seen elsewhere,” Brian said.
At that moment, Frank’s world stopped. His heart began beating faster and he felt dizzy.
In a small, still voice, he heard the Lord say: “Ask him if you can come over. And then I want you to apologize. I will heal you.”
Frank paused a second, puzzled about why he would apologize and wondered if he was hearing from God.
But then he spoke.
“Brian, I hate to ask, but can I come over for a few minutes? Frank asked, not sure what he was doing.
“Oh, sure. It’s a little messy – me being a single guy and all. Is everything OK?”
After they entered the living room, Brian asked: “Can I get you something the drink? You don’t look well at all.”
“Yes, water would be nice if it’s no trouble. Thank you.”
Brian came back with the glass of water and sat down.
“What’s on your mind Frank?”
“Brian, we...Joan and I...didn’t invite you on purpose, and I’m sorry.”
“I don’t understand.”
“Because of what our church teaches, and what the neighbors might think, Brian, we, Brian, we assumed you were -” Frank said, trying to catch his breath and avoid eye contact with Brian.
“We're what?”
“We thought, I mean, we didn’t realize you had a girlfriend. We thought you might be gay.”
Instead of exploding, Brian just sat there a moment and let it sink in. He saw how embarrassed Frank was about the whole situation.
“Frank, I’m far from gay, which shouldn’t have any bearing on anything anyway,” he said. “I accept your apology.”
“Thank you Brian. You don’t know how hard it was to tell you that.”
Frank thought he was finished and started to stand up, but he barely had any energy in his legs.
“No, please stay, Frank. Just take it easy.”
“Last night,” Frank said, gaining some renewed strength and focus, “didn’t go well at all.”
