The
two men remained silent for about a minute and then Brian asked Frank: “Can
we pray about all of this?”
“Yes, Brian. That would be good.”
“Good and gracious and merciful Father,” Brian began, “thank you for bringing us together as neighbors. I don’t know about Frank, but for me, this has been a time together that you clearly wanted to bless. I thank you for the faith you’ve given Frank, for the faith you’ve given me. Through your strength, you enabled us to share our hearts. Forgive me, Lord, if I said anything out of order. Please bless Frank and his family. Please help Frank with his struggle in terms of the alcohol and any other stronghold in his life. Help him know your will for his life, for any outreach he might get involved in with the AIDS home or elsewhere. Help me, Lord, with issues of anxiety and my impatience. Please bless us as neighbors and help us get to know one another better for your honor and for your glory. Amen.”
“Thank you Brian.”
They embraced and Frank headed home. Once inside, Frank headed toward their bedroom. He passed the door to the attic and thought about the bottle that awaited him. He stepped into the attic, picked up the bottle of scotch and carried it outside. Without hesitating, he added it to the rest of the garbage.
Frank wondered if he could survive without the booze.
The quiet voice returned. “I took away your desire. I promised to heal you. I will heal more of you.”
Filled with hope, Frank walked back to the house and collapsed in the living room, tears rushing down his face as he lay on the carpet.
“Thank you Lord. Thank you for humbling me, awakening me. I don’t know what tomorrow will bring, but I know you’ll be with me. Forgive me for being among the blind sinners.”
